Samoa: 1898 Germany vs US over Samoa- There was a Samoan crisis and conflict between Germany, USA, and Great Britain. During the Samoan Civil War. 1899 US vs Germany Split- The conflict was ended in the Tripartite Convention in 1899. The Convention stated that the Samoan archipelago would be split between German and American sides. German Samoa eventually became a republic while we still hold American Samoan. Problems of Defining States A state is an area organized into a political unit that is ruled by an established government that has control over its internal and foreign affairs. It occupies an established area on Earth?s surface and has a permanent population. States have sovereignty, which is independency from control of internal affairs by other states. Korea: One State or Two? Korea was once a Japanese colony which was divided into occupation zones by the U.S. and the former Soviet Union after they defeated Japan in World War II.
