Distribution of Ethnicities in the United States The two most numerous ethnicities in the US are Hispanic or Latinos (15%) and African Americans (13%). Clustering of Ethnicities Ethnic groups may live in a particular region and they may live in particular neighborhoods. Regional Concentration of Ethnicities Hispanic or Latino: Clustered in Southwest (Mostly in Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, and California). ?Hispanic? is coined by the US government in 1973. African Americans: Clustered in Southeast (Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Maryland, South Carolina, and Mississippi).

Chapter 1 New World Beginnings 33,000 B.C. - A.D. 1769 225 Million Years Ago - Pangaea started to break apart. 10 Million Years Ago - North America was shaped by nature - Canadian Shield 2 Million Years Ago- Great Ice Age 35,000 Years Ago - The oceans were glaciers and the sea level dropped, leaving an isthmus connecting Asia and North America. The Bering Isthmus was crossed by people going into North America. 10,000 Years Ago - Ice started to retreat and melt, raising the sea levels and covering up the Bering Isthmus. Peopling the Americas Evidence suggests that early people may have come to the Americas in crude boats, or across the Bering Isthmus. By the time Columbus arrived in America in 1492, over 54 million people may have been living in North & South America.

A group of people who occupy a particular area and have a strong sense of unity based on a set of shared beliefs is a nation. A state with control over its internal affairs has sovereignty. Over the past half century, the number of sovereign states in the world has increased by more than a hundred. The world's largest state is Russia. Korea is a good example of a nation divided between more than one state. Two cities in Morocco, Ceuta and Melilla, are controlled by what country? Spain The only large land mass not part of a sovereign state is Antarctica.

Problems of Defining States A state is an area organized into a political unit that is ruled by an established government that has control over its internal and foreign affairs. It occupies an established area on Earth?s surface and has a permanent population. States have sovereignty, which is independency from control of internal affairs by other states. Korea: One State or Two? Korea was once a Japanese colony which was divided into occupation zones by the U.S. and the former Soviet Union after they defeated Japan in World War II.
