Chapter 12: Peoples and Civilizations of the Americas, 200–1500 CE 1.Classic-Era Culture and Society in Mesoamerica, 200–900 •Mesoamericans were unified by similarities in material culture, religious beliefs and practices, and social structures. •The agricultural foundation of Mesoamerican civilization had been developed centuries earlier. Major innovations include: irrigation, draining of wetlands, and terracing of hillsides. •Teotihuacan- a large Mesoamerican city at the height of its power in 450–600 C.E. The city had a population of 125,000 to 200,000 inhabitants and was dominated by religious structures, including pyramids and temples where human sacrifice was carried out.
