Wealth and Power in Renaissance Italy Renaissance A French word meaning ?rebirth? first used by art historian and critic Giorgio Vasari to refer to the rebirth of the culture of classical antiquity. Economic growth laid the material basis for the Italian Renaissance, and ambitious merchants gained political power to match their economic power. Patronage Financial support of writers and artists by cities, groups and individuals often to produce specific works or works in specific styles.
