In 1985, Louis Guillette discovered bizarre reproductive problems in American alligators in Lake Apopka. B. He developed the hypothesis that certain chemical contaminants in Lake Apopka were disrupting the endocrine system of alligators during development in the egg. C. Guillette and his co-workers found that Lake Apopka alligators had abnormally low hatchling rates starting in the years after a pesticide spill. The lake also received high levels of chemical runoff from agriculture. D. Guillette?s results showed that atrazine and nitrates act as endocrine

Location: Position on Earth?s surface Absolute location is derived from longitude and latitude. Place: Physical and human characteristics Physical: Landforms Climate Soil Animal life Human: Activities Means of transportation Religion Language Human interaction with the environment: how people alter the world around them. Hidden costs: pollution, pesticides. People?s adaptation: conformity to the land. i.e. Igloos in the north. Movement: Shift of people, goods and ideas Migration: people move to find resource/freedoms/natural disasters/war Trade: Movement of goods between areas. Resources are spread differently => import and export of goods.

Pesticide: anything that kills pest. (pest are things that are not wanted) *Used in agriculture, food storage, shipping, home use, water purification, preservatives and more. Types of Pesticides: - Biocide: Kills many things, most broad spectrum. - Herbicide: Kills plants, mostly weeds. - Insecticide: Kills insects. - Fungicide: Kills fungus, most dangerous! - Acaricide: Kills arachnids (8-legged) ex: spiders, ticks, mites. - Nematicide: Kills nematodes/roundworms - most are parasites. - Rodenticide: Kills rodents. - Avicide: Kills birds. Types - based on chemical structure: - Inorganic: Usually has poisonous elements like Arsenic. - Natural Organic: Natural toxins from animals or plants. - Fumigants: Small Carbon-compounds (gaseous form).
