To Kill a Mockingbird The world is an unfair and unjust place. The author, Harper Lee, delves into the world of racism, prejudice, and civil rights in To Kill a Mockingbird. In the novel, you see life through the eyes of a young girl, Scout Finch, in the southern United States during the 1930s. Scout?s father, an attorney, attempts to defend a black man who is accused of rape. Throughout the novel, the author utilizes characterization and irony to convey the theme that racism blinds one of the truth.

Female Characters in Hamlet, Romeo and Juliet, Macbeth William Shakespeare is generally considered an avant-garde writer with progressive ideas about gender. Because of the era in which he wrote, the women in his plays generally had to be wives, servants, or a woman of some type of ill repute. But an examination of the female characters of three of his major tragedies shows that though these women may have been secondary to the men in their lives, they were still complex, round characters and deserving of as much attention and analysis as their male counterparts.

What Is Their Meaning? Nathaniel Hawthorne uses a slew of symbols in the Scarlet Letter to show how different Hester and Dimmesdale are from the community they live in. Hawthorne uses the scarlet letter as the most recurring symbol throughout the novel. He also uses nature, such as the forest, rose bush, and meteor, and even uses people -Pearl, the "Black Man", and even Mistress Hibbins.
