High Middle Ages: A dynamic period in Europe beginning in the eleventh century in which the population became more dense and new towns began to rise. Much was created, such as agricultural advances that are still used in modern times. 2. Three-Field System: A system in which the peasant village divided its field into three parts: one sown with one crop, a second sown with another crop, and the third left to lie fallow. 3. Feudalism: A means of carrying on some kind of government on a local basis where no organized state exists.

AP Psychology Vocabulary Ablation purposely disabling or destroying part of the brain in order to study the functions of different areas of the brain Accommodation The creation of new cognitive schemas when objects, experiences, or other information does not fit with existing schemas. Action Potential The firing on a neuron. Occurs when the charge inside the neuron becomes more positive than the charge outside. Altruism Behavior that is unselfish and may even be detrimental but which benefits others. Amnesia Loss of memory. Usually only a partial loss such as for a period of time or biographical information. Analysis See Psychoanalysis. Anxiety The physiological and psychological reaction to an expected danger, whether real or imagined.

Chapter Outlines Chapter 1: Origins Study Outline Use this outline to preview the chapter before you read a particular section in your textbook and then as a selfcheck to test your reading comprehension after you have read the chapter section. What is history and why do we study it? History is the effort to reconstruct the past. The past must be understood so we can understand the factors that shape us today. Historians reconstruct the past by posing questions about it and then attempting to answer them by studying primary and secondary sources. Herodotus, the "father of history," joined the two concepts of inquiry and research. Historians must assess the validity and perspective of each source they study.
