Prince Henry the Navigator Prince Henry the Navigator - was a Portuguese royal prince, soldier, and patron of explorers. Henry sent many sailing expeditions down Africa's west coast, but did not go on them himself. These expeditions were sent to create much-needed maps of the West African coast, to defeat the Muslims, to spread Christianity, and to establish trade routes. Prince Henry helped begin the Great Age of Discovery that lasted from the 1400's to the early 1500's. School of Navigation: About 1418, Prince Henry started the first school for oceanic navigation along with an astronomical observatory at Sagres, Portugal. In this school, people were trained in nagivation, map-making, and science, in order to sail down the west of Africa.

Introduced jazz (a style of music influenced by Dixieland music and ragtime) A famous nightspot was called the Cotton Club where many famous Jazz players got their start Flappers In the 1920s, a new woman was born. She smoked, drank, danced, and voted. She cut her hair, wore make-up, and went to petting parties. She was giddy and took risks. She was a flapper.

Rhetorical Analysis #2 In Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring, she describes how Americans have progressively become crueler to wildlife animals. Her argument states that more wildlife is being killed by extermination poisonings and that these poisons are affecting not only the animals but humans as well. This piece, being written in the early 1960s, fits with what was going on in America at the time because America was so involved in foreign affairs with the Soviet Union and was so used to this brutality (being a while after World War II) that they weren’t so focused on the environment anymore, just how they were going to get their crops and such. That being said, the audience that Carson is addressing is Americans who have forgotten about the beauty and meaning that nature holds.
