Robin Fischer 6/17/08 T-Chart Chap 1-Democracy Howard Zinn Questioned the definition of Democracy. Define Democracy as a set of formal institutions. Representative government if closer to Democracy than monarchy. No representative can represent another person?s needs ?mutual insurance contract.? Majority doesn?t always rule. The election process is not great because of wealth. Certain issues don?t even stay behind the scenes. (Taxes and foreign policy.) Power rests in the hands of the president and a small group of advisors. In court, a defendant?s poverty affects hearing, right to bail and the quality of his counsel.
