DeBry 3 Alex DeBry Ms. Taylor English 1 0ctober Fear is something we have to think about almost a daily basis, some things that have risks people can push the fear aside but the fear will always be there. Fear can be very powerful and can lead societies to chaos. The biggest fears in the book were fears of dying and the fear of the unknown. Every body in the book had their own way of expressing their fear and what they had a fear of, but it was in everyone. In William Golding?s book The Lord of the Flies, fear is what eventually causes them to turn against each other until they are so paranoid about the beast that they kill one of the boys on the island thinking it is the beast.

First Section ? ?Interesting / Valuable Quotes? Chapter 2 page 18: ?A fire! Make a fire!? At once half the boys were on their feet. Jack clamored among them, the conch forgotten. The boys are longing to be saved and to get off the island. They would do whatever to get help. When the idea of the fire as a signal for passing by ships to notice them was suggested, they got energetic and were eager to build the fire on top of the mountain. They want to return to their old lives so they all agree on taking part in the fire even when not all the boys knew each other. Even the conch, the most valuable thing to them was forgotten at the moments. As the story goes on, the boys maintain the fire and I also realized that the fire is their hope. Chapter 5 page 82:

The author never specifically states what the situation is at the beginning of the novel, although you can infer that there was a plane crash that left these kids stranded on this island. One place where you would infer this would be when Piggy said ?When we was coming down I looked through one of them windows. I saw the other part of the plane. There were flames coming out of it.?(8).
