Ch 10: Photosynthesis The Process That Feeds the Biosphere Photosynthesis is the process that converts solar energy into chemical energy Directly or indirectly, photosynthesis nourishes almost the entire living world Autotrophs sustain themselves without eating anything derived from other organisms Autotrophs are the producers of the biosphere, producing organic molecules from CO2 and other inorganic molecules (fixing carbon) Almost all plants are photoautotrophs, using the energy of sunlight to make organic molecules Photosynthesis occurs in plants, algae, certain other protists, and some prokaryotes Heterotrophs obtain their organic material from other organisms Heterotrophs are the consumers of the biosphere

The Process That Feeds the Biosphere Photosynthesis: the conversion of light energy to chemical energy that is stored in glucose or other organic compounds (plants, algae, certain prokaryotes) Photosynthesis nourishes almost the entire living world directly & indirectly An organism acquires organic compounds it uses for energy & carbon skeletons by autotrophic or heterotrophic nutrition Autotroph: PRODUCER an organism that obtains organic food molecules w.o. eating other organisms or substances derived from other organisms (use energy from sun or oxidation of inorganic substances to make organic molecules from inorganic ones) Produce their organic molecules from CO2 & other inorganic raw materials obtained from environment ULTIMATE SOURCE OF ORGANIC COMPOUNDS

Chapter 10: Photosynthesis ?Photosynthesis is the process that converts solar energy into chemical energy ?Directly or indirectly, photosynthesis nourishes almost the entire living world This chapter is as challenging as the one you just finished on cellular respiration. However, conceptually, it is a little easier because the concepts learned in Chapter 9: Chemiosmosis, and an electron transport system play a central role in photosynthesis. 1. As a review, define the terms autotroph and heterotroph. Keep in mind that plants have mitochondria and chloroplasts and do both cellular respiration and photosynthesis.

Chapter 10 Photosynthesis Overview: The Process That Feeds the Biosphere Photosynthesis Is the process that converts solar energy into chemical energy Plants and other autotrophs Are the producers of the biosphere Plants are photoautotrophs They use the energy of sunlight to make organic molecules from water and carbon dioxide Figure 10.1 Photosynthesis Occurs in plants, algae, certain other protists, and some prokaryotes These organisms use light energy to drive the synthesis of organic molecules from carbon dioxide and (in most cases) water. They feed not only themselves, but the entire living world. (a) On land, plants are the predominant producers of food. In aquatic environments, photosynthetic organisms include (b) multicellular algae, such

Chapter 10 notes Photosynthesis Photosynthesis In Nature All life acquires organic compounds for energy and carbon skeletons by one of two ways - ______________: (autos = self, trophos = feed) - they sustain themselves w/out eating other organisms Photosynthesis In Nature - plants are _________________ because they use light as a source of energy - __________: (hetero = other, different) - live on compounds produced by other organisms Heterotrophs are dependent on photoautotrophs for food and oxygen Photosynthesis In Nature ________________ are the site of photosynthesis in plants All green parts of plants have chloroplasts - color is from ____________, the green pigment in the chloroplasts
