This increased the movement of people into cities because machines took the place of people in agriculture and people were needed in cities to man the machines. Many moved to cities. Native white Southern politicians who joined the Republican party after the war and advocated the acceptance of and compliance with congressional Reconstruction were labeled scalawags. To most white Southerners, scalawags were an unprincipled group of traitorous opportunists who had deserted their countrymen and ingratiated themselves with the hated Radical Republicans for their own material gain. The devastation in the South after the war, coupled with the economic and social problems, created a need for progressive political action that the disenfranchised white population could not address.

Anson Jones- He was a doctor, businessman, congressman, the fourth and last President of Republic of Texas Juan Seguin- He was a soldier who gave massages from Texas to Mexico. Robert E. Lee- He was a soldier in the U.S. Army for thirty-two years. Ulysses S. Grant- He was the 18th President of the United States.

In clear day light, drivers had to turn on their headlights to see because of all the air pollution caused by everyday use from big production factories. Another waste product from the large industrial factories was fluid waste, which was dumped into Tennessee River, having the potential to be very harmful to that ecosystem. Some factories were even closed down and abandoned because of so much pollution that existed there. Explain:

Trail of Tears - Cherokees in mountains of Georgia and western North Carolina

- Adopted constitution declaring their separation as a domestic dependent nation

- Georgia declared state law extended over the Cherokees living in its boundaries

- Cherokee Nation v. Georgia (1831) John Marshall declared that the court did not have jurisdiction to rule on the case however, the Cherokees had an “unquestionable right” to their land

- Georgia then passes a law declaring Cherokees had to acquire a license to live withing Georgia

- Worcester v. Georgia (1832) declared that the Georgia law was unconstitutional because the Cherokee nation was a “distinct political nation”
