Campbell's Biology, 9e (Reece et al.) Chapter 3 Water and Life Life evolved in the ocean, and the chemistry of life occurs in an aqueous environment. These questions explore the properties of water that are important to sustain life?s chemical processes, organismal physiology, and interactions of organisms with their environment. Quantitative properties such as heat content, molarity, and pH are also addressed. A few questions address how human activities affect the global environment through acid rain and acidification of the ocean. Multiple-Choice Questions 1) In a single molecule of water, two hydrogen atoms are bonded to a single oxygen atom by A) hydrogen bonds. B) nonpolar covalent bonds. C) polar covalent bonds. D) ionic bonds. E) van der Waals interactions.

Campbell's Biology, 9e (Reece et al.) Chapter 1 Introduction: Themes in the Study of Life This introductory chapter explores the basic themes and concepts of biology, with emphasis on the core theme of evolution. It also introduces students to the thinking of scientists. Questions are therefore general; however, an effort has been made to include some from each skill level. As in the rest of this test bank, questions that feature art or those for which several questions follow upon some data or a scenario are placed together at the end of the chapter. Multiple-Choice Questions 1) A localized group of organisms that belong to the same species is called a A) biosystem. B) community. C) population. D) ecosystem. E) family. Organic definitions Homolytic fission ? when a bond breaks by splitting the shared pair of electrons between the two products. It produces two free radicals, each with an unpaired electron Heterolytic fission ? when a bond breaks with both the shared electrons going to one of the products. It produces two oppositely charged ions. Elimination ? when a small molecule is removed from a larger molecule, leading to the formation of an unsaturated product Addition reaction ? when two reactants combined to form a single product. This type of reaction is characteristic of unsaturated compounds containing double or triple bonds

Variation A mutation can be defined as a change in the type of the amount of DNA, which arises from: Mistakes in the copying of DNA during, or just before, cell division occurs ? for example, the wrong bases become paired up Damage to the DNA ? some environmental conditions can alter the sequencing of DNA (radioactive materials ? mutagens, such as carcinogens, which cause cancer) Uneven distribution of chromosomes during the division of cells and then fertilisation following on from this and, therefore, carrying the trait or the defect forward

G?day. My name is Samuel Ellan Daniels. But you can just call me Sam. I?m going to take you back and show you a look inside my childhood. I was born in 1919, and times were much different then. We didn?t have phones or ipods back then. I was born into a colored family, and as a baby, I remember my parents talking about the KKK. They were a group of people who hated blacks like me. Apparently we were ?different?. My parents always worried about them, and each night before bed we thanked God for keeping us safe. Apparently the year before I was born, a huge war just got over. Everyone was happy, and had jobs. Even my colored parents both got jobs working for Ford. It was pretty special, and I was proud of them. Imagine both your parents working for Microsoft. Yea, it was neat.
