In re Gault SUPREME COURT DECISION A H M E D E L S A Y E D / L U L U G U O In re Gault, 387 U.S. 1 (1967), was a landmark U.S. Supreme Court decision which established that under the Fourteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution, juveniles accused of crimes in a delinquency proceeding must be afforded many of the same due process rights as adults such as the right to timely notification of charges, the right to confront witnesses, the right against self-incrimination, and the right to counsel. The court's opinion was written by Justice Abe Fortas, a noted proponent of children's rights. Appellants- Paul L. Board #8 A number of years ago the Rand Corporation (a "think tank" essentially) listed what it considered to be the greatest "disasters" in the history of humanity.? Not surprisingly, World War II ranked high on the list (though I don't recall just where).? Faragher, in chapter 25, gives a solid overview of the war, from both the "home front," as well as the actual military conflicts overseas.? At the end of the chapter, it is noted that an estimated 40-50 million people died in the war.? Personally, I have seen estimates of up to 80 million (probably too high).? Victory, but at what a cost??
