On Dec 7, 1941, Japan launched an attack on America. The attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii caused great damage and carnage, sinking several powerful battleships, and nearly destroying the American naval powers. Japan damaged a large portion of the U.S. Navy, but did not completely cripple it. The attack killed over 2,000 soldiers and civilians, but did not destroy America's Pacific Fleet aircraft carriers, which were not in port at the time. America declared war on Japan on Dec 8th, one day after the attack. Thus began the four-year Pacific War portion of World War Two between the U.S. and Japan.
