Linking Expressions/Transitional Phrases Use Linking expressions to show how ideas are related and make a paragraph or essay read smoothly. Linking expressions are words or phrases that show relationship between ideas, details and examples in a paragraph. Such expressions tie together sentences, showing how one idea is related to the one that comes before it, or after it.
