Pratima Singh AP Language and Composition Hour 3 September, 10th, 2012 Quote - ?There is much more to being a patriot and a citizen than reciting the pledge or raising a flag.? ? Jesse Ventura Qualities of a Patriot When I think of the word patriot, loyalty and sacrifice come to my mind, yet being a patriot does not have one simple formula. The volunteer who helps serve food at a soup kitchen is just as helpful to the country as the soldier who fights the wars. Just by waving your countries flag or singing the national anthem everyday does not make one a patriot. To be a patriot one must be actively participating in the community, be willing to listen to other people?s point of view and be well versed in their countries constitution.

George Basaly September 30, 2010 Mrs. Rochford Period 7 A Collection of Essays by George Orwell Speaker: The speaker of this book is the author himself, George Orwell. As well as writing novels, he wrote many essays, and decided to publish a select few of them into a single book. He recollects many important events that he has witnessed, and reflects and analyzes them through his pen. Ever since he was a child, his dream was to always be a writer. I know that he is the voice of his essays because in one particular one, ?Such, Such Were the Joys?? he writes, ?I base these generalizations on what I can recall of my own childhood outlook,? because he wrote his essays based on his personal experiences, in this case, he recalls his childhood sweetheart, Elise.

The Upside of Extremism In 1963, at the height of racial segregation in the southern United States, Martin Luther King Jr. was arrested for a non-violent protest in Birmingham, Alabama. King?s arrest caused many of his religious peers to examine his methods. Eight of his fellow clergymen responded to his actions in a letter that questioned why he found it necessary to protest segregation. In his Letter from a Birmingham Jail, Martin Luther King Jr. addresses his fellow clergymen on the necessity of civil disobedience in overcoming segregation. His primary rhetorical strategies are appeals to religion and patriotism, and while the biblical allusions may at first appear to be his primary method, patriotism takes precedence.
