Style Analysis: Act 3, Scene 4. In Act 3, Scene 4 of William Shakespeare?s Hamlet, he (Shakespeare) crafts a scene of murder and confrontation, a catalyst in the downward spiral that is Hamlet. Female Characters in Hamlet, Romeo and Juliet, Macbeth William Shakespeare is generally considered an avant-garde writer with progressive ideas about gender. Because of the era in which he wrote, the women in his plays generally had to be wives, servants, or a woman of some type of ill repute. But an examination of the female characters of three of his major tragedies shows that though these women may have been secondary to the men in their lives, they were still complex, round characters and deserving of as much attention and analysis as their male counterparts.

?To be, or not to be? That is the question.? Actually, it is not the only one in this play. In fact, William Shakespeare?s The Tragedy of Hamlet Prince of Denmark is considered to be, ?the play of questions,? because of all of the ambiguities that the audience cannot seem to solve. Is Hamlet actually mad? Is the ghost of King Hamlet real? Is Ophelia, Polonius? innocent, unmarried daughter pregnant? Although Shakespeare does not directly say whether Ophelia is or is not pregnant, there is strong evidence that proves it. In proving that Ophelia is pregnant, although the other characters do not know about it, it is seen that the pregnancy directly affects what the other characters think of Hamlet.

O n a dark winter night, a ghost walks the ramparts of Elsinore Castle in Denmark. Discovered first by a pair of watchmen, then by the scholar Horatio, the ghost resembles the recently deceased King Hamlet, whose brother Claudius has inherited the throne and married the king’s widow, Queen Gertrude. When Horatio and the watchmen bring Prince Hamlet, the son of Gertrude and the dead king, to see the ghost, it speaks to him, declaring ominously that it is indeed his father’s spirit, and that he was murdered by none other than Claudius. Ordering Hamlet to seek revenge on the man who usurped his throne and married his wife, the ghost disappears with the dawn.
