The Parthians were a major force by 247 B.C.E. after taking over Iran and Mesopotamia. Their threshold of Central Asia encouraged trade along the route that became the Silk Road. Central Asian life = wine, women, and song 2. 128 B.C.E., Zhang Jian began journey westward for Emperor Wu of the Han dynasty; encountered westward flowing rivers in Ferghana valley, as well as horse breeders with well-bred horses. (deemed descendants of heavenly horse)
