The purpose is to be a collective defense against any attacks from outside parties and to promote peace and democracy throughout states around the world. Formation and Beginnings NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) was founded in 1949 when the North Atlantic Treaty was signed to counter the Soviet Union and its satellite states in Eastern Europe. Even after the fall of the Soviet Union, NATO continues to exist and promote peace among states and has expanded with new membership of former communist nations. Member States
