Evolution Debate: 1920?s and Now The debate over whether evolution should be taught in schools captured the nation?s attention during the Monkey Trial in 1925. John T. Scopes, a high-school biology teacher, was indicted for teaching Charles Darwin?s theory of evolution. Darwin?s theory of evolution states that human beings evolved by natural selection or random genetic mutation as opposed to the story of creation in the Bible. This angered the American people because they felt that the teaching of evolution was destroying faith in God and the Bible, and also that it was contributing to the moral breakdown of the youth. For this reason, John T. Scopes was found guilty and was fined one-hundred dollars for his actions.
