AP Euro Notes Sec 27-2 pp.868-872 AND 876- 888 Nalani Story THE AFTERMATH OF THE WAR: EMERGENCE OF THE COLD WAR Tehran Conference (1943) Stalin, Roosevelt, and Churchill, the leaders of the Big Three of the Grand Alliance, met at Tehran, Iran in November of 1943 primary purpose was to determine the way the final assault on Germany would be conducted Roosevelt and Stalin overruled Churchill and decided that the British and Americans would invade the continent through France in the Spring of 1944 not through the Balkans as Churchill wanted decision meant that Eastern Europe would be liberated by the Russians agreed to link up with the Soviets in Germany and partition Germany upon its defeat Yalta Conference (1945)

Analyzing the World War II Conference What basic wartime strategy was decided at the December 22, 1941, meeting of Prime Minister Churchill and President Roosevelt? On December 22, 1941, in meeting of Prime Minister Churchill and President Roosevelt, they decided to concentrate on weakening the Axis Powers and contain Japan until they had enough military success in Europe to attack Japan. What possible reason could the Soviets give for breaking off relations with the Polish government-in-exile? The Soviets broke off relations with the Polish government-in-exile for the reason that they turned towards a democratic system. The USSR was communist and wanted Poland to return to a communist style of government.

The Cold War The victors of WWII could not agree about the disposition of the postwar world President Roosevelt and Truman believed that European countries liberated from Germany should hold free elections. The ?Big Three? leaders met at Tehran (November 1943), Yalta (February 1945), and Potsdam (July 1945) to discuss war policy and the postwar situation Tensions and mistrusts among them were already evident before the fighting finished Stalin was determined to create a pro-Soviet zone in Eastern Europe. His armies were in place, enabling him to enforce his will. In the decades after WWII, the ?Iron Curtain,? a phrase coined by Winston Churchill, became both an economic and political dividing line
