Board #8 A number of years ago the Rand Corporation (a "think tank" essentially) listed what it considered to be the greatest "disasters" in the history of humanity.? Not surprisingly, World War II ranked high on the list (though I don't recall just where).? Faragher, in chapter 25, gives a solid overview of the war, from both the "home front," as well as the actual military conflicts overseas.? At the end of the chapter, it is noted that an estimated 40-50 million people died in the war.? Personally, I have seen estimates of up to 80 million (probably too high).? Victory, but at what a cost??

Yesterday the Japanese Navy attacked the United States Navy Base. The United States Navy Base was in Pearl Harbor which is West of Honolulu on the island of O?ahu, Hawaii. They attacked because the Japanese wanted to destroy the United States ships and weapons before they could fully get into World War II. They tried to do this by having two waves of airplanes. The first wave arrived at 7:55 a.m. and contained 183 planes. The next wave came about an hour later and consisted of 167 planes.
