Chapter 3: Society and Culture in Provincial America Introduction Diverging Societies American consumers had a lot of English stuff, but the societies were growing apart people not from England came into America Americans had regional differences from one another The Colonial Population Immigration and natural Increase Europeans and Africans grew rapidly and overtook the NA pop. majority of settlers were of lower classes (laborers) Indentured Servitude Origins bound to masters for 4-5 year term; get passage to America, food, shelter in return English gov?t sometimes dumped ships of unwanted people in America some were sold as indentured servants, others chose to be hanged Indenture system provided way to help with labor shortage
