Cell Theory All living organisms are composed of one or more cells Cells are the basic units of structure and function in an organism Cells come only from the reproduction of existing cells Cell Shapes Each cell has a shape that has evolved to allow the cell to perform its function effectively Cell Surface Area-To- Volume Ration The size of a cell is limited by the relationship of the cell?s outer surface area to its volume. As a cell grows, volume increases much faster than its surface area does. Cell Membrane- Selectively Permeability The cell membrane allows only certain molecules to enter or leave the cell. Prokaryotes vs. Eukaryotes Prokaryotes are organisms that lack a membrane- bound nucleus and membrane bound organelles.

Photosynthesis Study + Cellular Respiration Study Guide Photosynthesis - conversion of light energy to chemical energy (radiant energy to chemical ?bond energy?) Except for sulfur respiring bacteria and organisms in deep sea vent communities Every living organism on this planet gets its energy from the sun Reactants-carbon dioxide from the air and water from rain In the presence of light and chlorophyll(pigment) Products-free oxygen and a sugar Sugar produced is mostly not glucose Three carbon sugar(pgal) Used later to make glucose Sunlight is made up of all the different kinds of electromagnetic radiation(EMR) All EMR is the same except wavelength Arranged from shortest to longest in the EMR spectrum Short wavelengths have lots of energy and vice versa
