because the french were their trade partners and the indians needed them to get into the big european trade. the french needed the indians for protection and they became allies
Oh, I know this. The Father of New France (check chapter 6 for the guys actual name i forget it) made a good relationship with them because they wanted the trade benifits and because they were their close neighbors and being allied with your neighbors has its obvious benifits.

The indians sided with the french because the indians figured that the sparsely populated fur-trading settlements were much to be preferred to the fast growing west-ward pushing American colonies:)
In general, the Indians sided with the French because of their stronger economic ties with them (the fur trade). Furthermore, they generally treated them less harshly than the British colonists did. The French had been more willing to cooperate with the Indians while the British colonists just wanted their land.
