How did the REpublican party at the time keep their laissez-faire beliefs if they passed the Ford-McCumber tariff? Isn't that NOT laissez-faire? Them getting involved by not allowing foreign competition???

During the 20s the Repubs reverted back to their Old Guard, conservative ways, which included laissez-faire. By raising the tariff, the Republican party helps out the corporations, another characteristic of Old Guard Repub, by promoting domestic trade.
