Twenty years ago every large and paying baber shop over the country was in the hands of black men; today in all the large cities you cannot find a single large or first-class barber shop operated by colored [black] men. The black man had a monopoly of that industry, but had gone on from day to day in the same old monotnous [boring] way without improving anything about the industry. As a result, the white man taken it up........
In Washington's first sentence, he states that black baber shops have disappeared in the twenty years betwwn 1875 and 1895. Is this a fact or an opinion, give me one reason as to why it is a fact or an opinion.
Also, in his second sentence, what explanation does Washington give for the disappearence of black barber shops?
Are there any other possible easons that a black barber shop might have had trouble staying in business in the 1890's?
I did read all 3 chapters but just need help with this part!
Well, whites controlled business and the economy during that time, and the prejudice towards blacks could cause black barber shops to disappear. Especially in the South, the KKK would attack blacks who tried to start a business, at least I'm almost sure they would.
