Advice

I was hoping to get advice on the new school year with managing time. Could I possibly handle 4 AP classes and joining 2 clubs including National Honor Society? My 4 AP classes are AP Eng Language/Comp, AP Spanish Lang, AP Biology, and AP US history along with calculus honors and ceramics (which I chose so I don't overstress myself, but I would've including anatomy since it goes well with Biology). Throughout the year last year, I only had 1 AP class AP world history, and I didn't have too much work now that I think of it, but by the last 5 months of school I was getting 5 hours of sleep since I usually work on homework at night while taking 4 hours naps right after school. Is there any advice I could get to manage time, and what I would possibly be facing with these classes?

This schedule is absoultely managable. My senior year I took 4 AP classes and was in NHS, BSA, NSBE, and an assistant stage manager, so I know you can handle this schedule. I was also able to get 6-7 hours of sleep a day. One piece of advice I can give you is to get some type of planner so you can keep track of everything you need to do. Also, I would suggest taking 1 hour naps after school instead of 4 hour naps so you will not feel so drained when you wake up. This would also allow you to get more homework time and more sleep time at night. Another thing I would suggest you do is alternate between classes when studying and doing your homework. Like doing your AP Biology for an hour and then moving on to AP US History and so on. Do not worry if you do not finish one homework assignment before moving on to another one because you will be able to come back to it later after going through all your assignments. This will help to relax your brain by giving you a break from each subject.

As far as what you will be facing with these classes, AP Biology requires a lot of memorizing. If you memorize well then that class will be a breeze. Please feel free to ask me any questions you have concerning that class. AP English Language just requires you to think about rhetoric and the strategies writers use to convey their point. Also, there may be a lot of writing depending on your teacher. My AP English class we wrote maybe 3 out-of-class essays a quarter and maybe 2 in-class essays. AP Spanish also require a lot of memorizing and practice. I did not take this class but several of my friends did and they did not think it was too bad, but they did study a lot. I think flashcards may be the best study stategy for this course. As far as AP US History goes, I cannot help you there. Sorry. I hope this helped you.

I agree completely with apizhard. I'd also like to add that when you have such a heptic schedule make sure you schedule in a bit of "sanity time" ceramics might be good for that - I personally love to paint pottery although I haven't ventured into making it very far - but it is a class after all and you might need a little extra at night. Little things like playing a card game for 15 minutes or taking a snack break can help you relax an make you much more productive. You can even take a short (probably 5 or less minutes) break between subjects and walk around or change scenery or do something short but relaxing.

Also there are several people here who can help with AP US, including me, so let us know if you need some help!

I'm doing Cross Country, 6 AP, and 3-4 clubs. My philosophy is to make it work. Think about your Work in a Weekly schedule. Some AP classes allow you to plan ahead. If you have this ability, space you Homework heavily on the days that you don't usually hang out with your friends or have events to attend. I use a build up schedule for example. I use alot of my time on Monday and Tuesday, peak on Wednesday, semi-relax on Thursday, and hangout with Friends on Friday. Luckily I have sports in the morning.

You just have to become an expert at time management and find ways to cut down note taking. For example, find notes that go with your text book and then expound upon them. This will cut down total time in note taking and you create an excellent outline. If you are really motivated, use your time in the car to study or do homework. Every minute counts if you are on a tight schedule. I've been able to keep a social life by doing this. :)

Remember, don't doubt your abilities. You can do it.
