feminist criticims. plz help

In my english class were learning about different ways to read and interpret a piece of lit. work. and I cant get my head around feminist criticism. I've asked people in my class, and Ive gone to my teacher to ask for help, but I still dont quite understand it. If someone thinks they could help me that would be great! :)

I remember learning it two years ago, but I never actually used it. I'll see what I can find and get back to you later.

Tsk Tsk pianogirl, you should have kept your notes...

But feminist criticism, basically you're looking at how women are portrayed as opposed to men. Seeing as how this movement arose mere decades ago, there isn't a plethora of literature that is positive when put under a feminist's careful eye. Feminist see the world as being a male dominated place and think that that fact shines out in literature. E.g., for a criticism of Little Red Riding Hood a feminist would point out that the woodsman (lumberjack, whatever he was, it was a he) was the one to save Little Red and her Grandmother from the wolf, which signifies men's supposed superiority in society. They would also add that this type of scenario (damsels in distress) is recurrent throughout literature. So that's what I learned about it. There's also a website that might help:

http://bcs.bedfordstmartins.com/virtualit/poetry/critical_define/crit_fe...

It's also got links to other types of criticism if you are confused with those too.

Just because I can't get to my room doesn't mean that I lost them...

And yes, I agree with that explanation. Thanks again for helping.

Also, to expound on VVV's explination, femminist crit also looks at how other male writers portryay women. One major example is of the book 'Memoirs of a Gisha' which was actually written by a man. Crit writers have been looking at the book and analyzing the truth of various scenarios the main character gets into, but they are mainly concerened if the author can actually accuratly show a woman's struggle, while being a man.

Feminist crit also is lumped togeather with gay and lesbian crit as well, generally under the title of gender crit (this is because the subjects are all relitvly new). It is traced back to Virginia Wolfe, and generally points out that white men have established the crit categories/conventions. The main way that feminist crits look at material is to see how the characters (women, obviously, in this case) are portrayed and how other people respond to those characters.

I hope this helps! I got a litlle caried away, but as you can see I really do like English...

I'm glad. I just hate it when there's one thing that I can't get my head around, and noone can explain it...

You all perpetuate gender-based stereotypes by using the word "woMEN" or "woMAN." If you are going to use this kriticism, at least spell it "womYn." Makes you look more like a feminist. Any word with the word man, men, or son in it should be gender-modified if your kriticism is to have any weight.

Also, if you are evaluating the inequalities of men and woMEN, make sure you talk about how our society is based around a male figure. When you think of leadership, you think of a man or president. All presidents have been male. All vice-presidents have been male. Maybe say that breaking this stereotype is essential to reforming society?? I dunno. I guess you are kritisizing a piece of literature from a feminist perspective, and not really feminism itself.

(I, in no way, support or affirm any of the aforementioned assertions. I just wanted to help.)
