Other Individual Activities that will Boost up your Resume

Jun 22, 2009

Individual activities play a big role in college applications. The more activities you have on your resume, the better off you’ll be. Colleges don’t just look at your GPA, SAT/ACT scores, and recommendations. They also look at your volunteer/experience background as well as how active you are in the community.

Here are a few activities that will help you boost up your resume:

1. Join a recreational/competitive/school sports team: Get involved in sports ranging from basketball, soccer, tennis, swimming, football, track and field, baseball etc… and stick with that sport. Be consistent and committed to one or two sports instead of changing from one sport to the next.
2. Go online to a volunteer search page and be on the lookout for volunteer opportunities around your community. Some good activities could be dealing with the environment, recreational, tutoring, pet store, library etc..
3. Learn to play a musical instrument and enter into competitions to get awards.
4. Volunteer or intern at a local hospital or nursing home.
5. Take part in big organizations like The American Red Cross, World Vision, Habit for Humanity, Invisible Children etc… by holding fundraisers at school.
6. Go online and search up essay, poems, science, math contests and PARTICIPATE!!!
7. Go to a couple of the leadership camps that they offer each summer at different places. You can get more information on the Internet.
8. Do Science Fair every year from Grade 9- Grade 12. Colleges really look at Science Fair.
9. Do research with a professor at a university over the summer.
10. Try to learn as many languages possible.
11. Get a job at a restaurant, grocery store, mall, camp etc. to show colleges your work experience.
12. If you go to church, be involved as much as possible. Take part in the church choir, praise team, and even be a Sunday school teacher. Also try to volunteer at the church camps that are held during the summer.
13. Try to find opportunities to tutor kids in middle school or coach them in a sport/musical instrument if you have talent.
14. Start your own club that has a good cause and ask as much people to join. You can form a club outside of school or even in school! If you want to form a club in school, you will probably need to get it approved first.
15. At school, join a business club like FBLA or DECA and participate in the club’s competitions. You might end up making nationals!
