How to Handle Your High School Homework without Procrastination

Jun 22, 2009

What is the one thing high school students do all the time without knowing it? PROCRASTINATION!!! As teenagers enter their freshman year in high school, they will be controlled by procrastination at some point in time. So many teenagers are doing it that it tends to put peer pressure on those who don’t do it. Even the smartest and hard-working students have procrastinated at least once in their lives. How do we handle such a compelling force? Well, I have good news. There are ways to get your homework done without procrastination, and I’m here to tell you how.

Tip #1- Make a homework schedule every week so you can follow it without wasting time. You won’t think about procrastination if you have a schedule to go by, and it makes you feel more productive. Tell yourself: The more time I procrastinate, the more time I will waste. Make sure you have the schedule with you wherever you go, so you will know when to do your homework.
Your schedule can look something like this:

5:00-5:30 Snack/Rest
5:30-6:00 Precal Hw
6:00-7:00 French and English Hw
7:00-7:30 Dinner
7:30-8:00 History Hw
8:00-8:45 Physics Hw
8:45-9:30 Free time
9:30-11:30 Study/Finish Hw
11:30 SLEEP

Tip #2- Do not MULTITASK, no matter what. Even though students believe they get more things done if they do more than one thing at once, it will make them waste more time. Students who do homework while watching television or surfing the web tend to lose their levels of concentration. A lot of the students who go on Facebook or AIM while working will start to procrastinate and complain to their friends. Tell yourself to do all your homework first, and then save the extra time for relaxing.

Tip #3- Plan your projects ahead of time. Never wait until the last minute to complete a big assignment. The longer you wait to start on a project, the more you will complain about the workload. Doing a little bit each day will ease up the stress and lower the procrastination level. Also, do not wait until the last minute to study for tests. It may seem weird to start studying for a test one or two weeks before the test day, but it will sure help you a lot.

Tip #4- Make more friends and ask for help when needed. Whenever you’re stuck on homework problems, do not panic. More and more students are procrastinating because they don’t understand how to do their homework, so they just end up not doing it. Always call or IM a friend when you need help with homework, and I’m sure he/she will help you out. Do not give up so easily, but ask all your friends for help.

Tip #5- Keep a positive attitude every day. I cannot stress this enough, but having a positive attitude will decrease the chances for procrastination. If you tell yourself to work hard and challenge yourself to work through the hardest homework problems, you will not regret it. You also need to be aware of the consequences of procrastinating because it is very likely that after you procrastinate, you will regret it. Procrastination is a bad habit and can be addicting, but you can stop it from happening.
