Balancing High School and a Social Life.

Jun 30, 2009

High school is a time when everyone thinks you need to grow up, act more mature, enter into the adult world, take responsibility, and shed yourself of silly childlike tendencies. Agreed, a lot of high school does consist of life long lessons that will shape who you are in college and beyond, but, one of the most important thing to remember to do in high school is not to forget to be yourself and allow yourself to still have some childish fun. A friend taught me, my junior year, that it's okay to loosen up a bit, and not completely be fixated on perfecting every part of your scholastic life at all times. High school can be seen in many perspectives, but personally, i think it is very beneficial to see it as something you enjoy. For example, as a child, silly jokes and games put a smile on faces. Regressing to such a tactic and attempting to network in that manner can be fun as well as profiting. As one did knock knock jokes as a child, you can spark up a conversation with another. When i was a freshman, the surroundings weren't detrimental to my being at all, but i learned that books and scholastic isn't just always the answer. Its important to network with others, even those who you feel inferior to or intimidated by. There may be a roar of upperclassman passing you and pushing you, but at one point, they were probably feeling or going through what you are and can always advise you.

Its important to remember to hold a childish and carefree persona about you to ease the stress that high school brings along, but not to be whirl pooled into the social world. What you wear, where you were, how much your dress is not what it eventually comes down to, but how much you studied, earned during that summer job, and who you hang out with shapes you and your future. Prioritizing is what allows you to hang out and have fun but still maintain a great GPA and extracurricular activities. Its important to stay focused during the week, once a week unwinding and letting go of the stress is imperative. Hanging out with your friends during volunteer days and on the sports field (courts) will allow you to get the best of both worlds. A perfect balance.
Hanging out with the right type of crowd is what gets you somewhere. Some people may seem cool but hang out with people who you feel comfortable with. High school is a new place and surrounding, regressing to a sanctuary with your closest friends is always a good idea. Although the idea of upperclassman may seem daunting when entering the school, its not too bad. Its detrimental that you idolize a upperclassman rather than fear them. Just like dogs, many of them can sense the fear, and you may not get bit, but getting shoved in a locker is a strong possibility (just kidding!!), but remember to stay calm and confident. Idolizing the right people can also allow you to guide yourself. Just stay calm and confident, have fun, but remember to focus in school and do well. Its all about balancing! Good Luck.
