Cheap Chilling: Party Like It's 1929... or 2009

Jul 14, 2009

The economy nowadays makes everything harder to afford, not to mention college. We know very well about pitching in somehow in college, like paying for our own books, clothes, or other living expenses.

So with that in mind, how can one not feel guilty about spending 10-plus dollars at the movies? But that movie you wanted to see is supposed to be hilarious! And assuming that you went to the movies with some friends, you cannot just go your separate ways after the movie ends, right? You decide to go to Starbucks to get your super movie critic on... and talk about how funny that one part was... with the guy... in the car... with the other guy... Yeah.... good times. Meanwhile, you sip your grande iced caramel macchiato and with each sip, any knowledge of the money you spent tonight slips away.

You just spent an awesome time with your friends. On the drive home, you reflect on the night and smile to yourself.

'That movie: probably best comedy of the summer. I really did down that popcorn... and the Coke. Wait, I ordered popcorn and Coke? That must have been like, what, almost 20 bucks total at the movies. And I spent five at Starbucks. I could have bought a shower caddy for college with that money.'

Suddenly your smile disappears. In the face of reality, you’re like a deer in headlights; you’re stuck. You want to chill with friends, but frankly, you need the money for more important items. No, what are you saying? Your friends are most important! Thus, the internal struggle ensues. But fear not! You can steal these FREE ideas to hang out without using much or any money.

1. Movies (or shows): You don’t need a special viewing room to enjoy the fact that you didn’t have to spend any money to watch a movie. You could have a movie marathon with movies you or your friend already has, or you can find one online on hulu.com or a show on sidereel.com.

2. Outdoor activities: These are self-explanatory and are probably best reserved for the daytime. You can go swimming, play ultimate frisbee, make up a game, whatever suits your fancy.

3. Video games: Even non-hardcore gamers will agree that a video game once in a while is really fun, like having a Wii, Rockband, or Guitar Hero fest. Unless you’re a hardcore gamer, which in that case, you can play your Left 4 Dead, Halo, or Call of Duty. My personal favorite: 4-player Wii tennis.

4. Board games: Remember board games from your early childhood? Monopoly is a classic for a reason. Or settle for Apples to Apples.

5. Photography/cinematography: The camera loves you... and your friends.

Maybe your parents or work can prevent you from having fun, but money shouldn’t. Remember to enjoy your summer!
