Time Management

Jul 07, 2009

High School students are known for being some of the busiest people but use their time the worst. As a senior I learned the hard way to manage time and set up a system to always know what I had that day for my schoolwork. I, myself, was a procrastinator who allowed things to happen around me and avoided taking control and found myself behind till I woke up and learned how to handle my own life. I am assuming that you don’t want the decisions made for you. So in order to keep you in control I have developed the 10 commandments of staying on top of your school load. (With some help from http://frank.mtsu.edu)

· Set up a regular time and place for study. This will save you time later on because you will be conditioned to study under certain conditions and it will become second nature
· No music or cell phones whatsoever. It will create distractions and your brain will want to listen to it no matter how calming
· Use daylight hours to study whenever possible. For most people for every hour of study done in daylight hours, it will take them one and a half hours to do the same task at night.
· Study in a well lit place but not to comfortable, your brain will begin to relax otherwise
· Keep a date book and write down all class assignment.
· Take breaks. Several short 30 minutes sessions are better that one long session.
· By using flash cards or summary sheets, you can use down times to study--while you're waiting for class to start or waiting for diner.
· If possible, schedule study time with a partner or partners. *Choose your partner wisely. Make sure you study, not catch up.
· Schedule the most difficult tasks for times when you are most alert. (For instance, if calculus is really difficult when you get home take a small break then get right on it!)
· Make a daily checklist. Set priorities. Do the most important tasks first.
