Permission to Brag?

Attention Underclassmen!
Extracurricular activities are a vital piece of your college application.

The place where you get to flaunt your activities is called the resume or brag sheet. Usually on the application, there are only a few spots. However, some applications allow you to attach a separate sheet.

As a new school year is approaching keep a few of these guidelines with you:

- Sign up for clubs
Not all of them! Only a few, and be sure to stick with them throughout your high school career. Try to get as involved as possible in club activities as these will help you earn volunteer hours and also get you a chance as a higher officer. Being President or Vice-President of one club looks better than being a longtime member of five.

- Volunteer
If you're not volunteering in your clubs then volunteer in your community or local hospital, charity, or senior home.

- Athletics
If you do not have hand-eye coordination, then don't bother with joining sports. It is not necessary for every college applicant to have done a sport in high school. If you really love sports, try out for the team and stick with them.

- Work experience
If you're not at practice after school, then you could be working. Internships look great on college applications! For those of you who have an after school job to help out the family, this will look great for your brag sheet as well. Going to college is to help prepare students for the "real world" and what wouldn't be better if the student already had a taste of reality in the working world?

Overall, you should not burden yourself with a myriad of activities. Just stick to a few such as five, more or less.
Remember, admission's officers love students who are COMMITTED.
