Democrats v. Whigs- campaigns turned to banners and parades- voter turnout was high I. The ?Corrupt Bargain? of 1824 JQA, Clay, Crawford, and Jackson all ran for president- they were all republicans- there was no majority so the election was thrown to the House- Clay was eliminated from the race but gave his support to JQA JQA became president and Clay was his Secretary of State- Being Sec. of State paved the way to the presidency- Jackson wasn?t having any of this and neither were others II. Tindall Ch 10 outline Nationalism and Sectionalism Economic Nationalism After the War of 1812 Madison strengthens government and national power. In 1816, created a new National Bank chartered fro twenty years. Started creating a National Road from the Atlantic Coast to Ohio in 1815. Henry Clay promoted economic nationalism, wanted higher tariffs, higher prices for federal lands, and a strong national bank to ensure economic growth. Lots of support and opposition towards this plan. Good Feelings James Monroe was elected president in 1816. Very traditional Republican, did not really promote economic nationalism, but his administration did, making him very popular, dominating the 1820 election also.

ADVANCED PLACEMENT UNITED STATES HISTORY IDENTIFICATIONS FOR UNIT III "Corrupt Bargain" The charge made by Jacksonians in 1825 that Clay had supported John Quincy Adams in the House presidential vote in return for the office of Secretary of State. Allegedly Clay knew he could not win, so he traded his votes for an office. Tariff of Abominations 1828 - Also called Tariff of 1828, it raised the tariff on imported manufactured goods. The tariff protected the North but harmed the South; South said that the tariff was economically discriminatory and unconstitutional because it violated state's rights. ADVANCED PLACEMENT UNITED STATES HISTORY IDENTIFICATIONS: UNIT TWO Articles of Confederation: powers, weaknesses, successes The Articles of Confederation delegated most of the powers (the power to tax, to regulate trade, and to draft troops) to the individual states, but left the federal government power over war, foreign policy, and issuing money. Strongest political support for declaring war against Britain came from the West and South. A crucial foreign policy goal for many ?war hawks? in the War of 1812 was the capture and annexation of Canada. A primary domestic goal of the War of 1812 for many of the ?war hawks? was eliminating the Indian resistance to further westward settlement. Besides creating a pan-Indian military alliance against white expansion, Tecumseh and the Prophet urged Native Americans to resist white ways and revive their own traditional culture. Native American resistance east of the Mississippi River was effectively crushed in the two battles of Tippecanoe and Horseshoe Bend. The War of 1812 was bitterly opposed by New England Federalists.
