How To Take Notes

I am a freshman taking AP world history, and was hoping to get ways to more efficiently take notes. As of now, it takes about ten minutes to take notes of one page. I am not sure how to identify what is necessary and what is not, and to compensate, wrote 43 pages of notes, when the teacher was looking for no more than 12. Also, how do you juggle committee meetings, homework, sports, etc? Thank you for your time!

If your teacher will allow you to tape the lectures that helps. Start general and work to the specific. The finer points of your notes will be necessary on the open ended questions relating multiple topics. For much of the MC questions, try and pick key ideas about general topics. This should cover a portion of the questions. Unlike some of the other AP exams, the world history is a fair portion of essay and relating concepts.

Develop your own "note-taking language". Abbreviations, accronyms etc. It helps if you try to find the main questions that your teacher is explaining during the lectures and write them down as well (for example, "What are the major differences between the different kinds of protists?") that way you'll have study questions all ready for yourself when it comes time for the test.

I would be specific and concise, and develop some type of shorthand that works for you. Read the material over beforehand so you know what the teacher's talking about.
