It's getting at how effective compromise i.e. The Missouri Compromise; Compromise of 1833; Compromise of 1850; Crittenden Compromise, etc. were in reducing or diffusing the tension that existed between the North and the South in the years leading up to the Civil War.

In other words did the various compromises help make things better, make things worse, or merely postpone the inevitable?

Yeah, key word is analyze. State whetehr or not the particular compromises were effective, and then go into detail about the reaasons for them working/not working

Just give like a solid detail of the compromises, and then give your view for working/not working. During this time period, slavery was one of the main issues. So like for the Compromise of 1850, talk about how CA was admitted as a free state which infuriated the South BUT, it also helped because the Fugitive Slave Act was passed, which requires all U.S. citizens to assist in returning the runaway slaves. You can say that it helped lessen the tensions because slaves were one of the backbones of Southern economy. The compromise enabled them to get their runaway slaves... Then go on to more details, specific events, etc.

Also this compromise was responsible for loosening/worsening the fight over Texas. Talk about how Texas was given $10 million for giving up its claims to western lands...but then again you need to talk about the South's reply about Texas...then again, talk about how there needed to be a "balance" between free states and slave states. Admitting CA, TX, and couple other states (can't remember -.-") would give more votes for the free states.

There are more, and that was just one compromise. Be sure to go into detail about how it was/wasn't effective in solving problems. Good luck :D.

The below statement is false.
The above statement is true.

You're prob in my class whoever Vballchic2007 is, but I don't know what to say either. We did a big thing where we talked about all the compromises and what they did, but I don't know how to say whether they were helpful or not and why. Also, I don't know how much detail to go into. Pelletier is basically crazy...
