Investigative Task help, how to read the 3-way tables?

I have a worksheet on Race and the Death Penalty, an Investigative Task. I am very confused on how to read the 3-way tables. So far we have done 2-way contingency table, which I have no problem with. But this one I am really getting lost.

The link is:

76 of 422 means what? 422 total black defendant or 422 total black victim? The defendant is the one getting accused (the guilty one?) while the victim is the innocent one?

I am not only confused with the data but as well as the terms :(

I will be asking the teacher tomorrow about this question anyways, I am posting here because I am hoping maybe someone can clear this up before I go ask my teacher.

Thanks in advance.
