Sigma Notation

Sigma Notation is a notation used to abbreviate long summations of a given expression.

ex.

The Greek letter sigma ( S ) is used to indicate that a given expression is a sum. The variable i is used to indicate the interval in which the summation will start and when it will it end. The term i2 + 1 is a dummy variable were i changes for each term of the summation.

Sum of the first n integers:

for n is a positive integer.

Sum of the first n powers: for n is a positive integer.
